How to create a search bar in react native

Hello People. This article discusses about How to create a search bar in react native. We use search bar in mobile apps to search a product, place etc. In this example let us see an example of a search bar that has a location based search function. The example code for a searchbar component is as follows.

import React, { useContext, useState, useEffect } from "react";
import styled from "styled-components/native";
import { Searchbar } from "react-native-paper";

import { LocationContext } from "../../../services/location/location.context";

const SearchContainer = styled.View`
  padding: ${(props) =>[3]};

export const Search = ({ isFavouritesToggled, onFavouritesToggle }) => {
  const { keyword, search } = useContext(LocationContext);
  const [searchKeyword, setSearchKeyword] = useState(keyword);
  useEffect(() => {
  }, [keyword]);
  return (
        icon={isFavouritesToggled ? "heart" : "heart-outline"}
        placeholder="Search for a location"
        onSubmitEditing={() => {
        onChangeText={(text) => {

You can search for a product based on the location using this search bar. All you need to do is type in the location. After that products in that location will be displayed in the products screen or the home screen. If you want to know how to create a home screen, the link is given at the end of this article.

How to create a search bar in react native

To clarify more on the search bar component, here we import search bar from the “react-native-paper” library. We import location context file into this search bar component file. Location context contains all the data and services related to location. Now let us look at the search function of this search bar. To clarify, this function takes isFavouritesToggled and onFavouritesToggle as arguments. After that when you mark a product as favourite, you can see it in the favourite bar component.

In addition, the saerch component uses searchKeyword as a state variable. By using the useEffect hook, we set the SearchKeyword with the value of keyword. We can do this by writing a function named onChangeText and and set SearchKeyword with text. This is the text that the user types in the search bar. We connect this to location context by using const { keyword, search } = useContext(LocationContext); . To clarify, what this does is it looks for the keyword entered by the user and searches for this location in the location context. Thus the search bar is performing its functionality
